The Sinharaja Forest Reserve
The Sinharaja Rainforest would perhaps be the most natural hotspot in the country - teeming with exotic flora and fauna and of great academic interest to naturalists. The World Heritage Sight remains untouched and no commercialisation is allowed in its environs in a bid to maintain its biodiversity.
Located close to the tropics, it has warm weather and heavy rains all year round. Its geographical location has been serendipitous for the country, because the island is carpeted with lush green vegetation of varying types, depending on the altitude. Thick jungles, rolling plains, sandy beaches, sheer mountain peaks and grassland are all part of Sri Lanka’s diverse charm. Apart from some of its urban areas that are commercialised and concretised, smaller towns and villages have their lush green scenery well preserved. Sri Lanka has been fortunate in retaining its green cover.
