Samakanda - Ecologically sustainable organic farm,Galle
Located approximately 20km inland from Galle, just off the Udugama Road near Nakiyadeniya, is the ecologically sustainable organic farm of Samakanda. The journey to the 60-acre ecologically sustainable organic farm of Samakanda is of interest in itself. As you leave the coast, you pass by little hamlets and briefly drive through Kottawa rainforest before slowly starting a meandering climb as the first hills come into view.
Samakanda, meaning “peaceful hill” in Sinhala, is located on a long ridge – reaching a maximum of 240m above sea level. With steep slopes on both sides, it is bordered to the east by a river, the Polwatta Ganga, which eventually joins the sea at Weligama. On good, clear days, it is possible to see the coast to the south, and to the Sinharaja Rainforest to the north.
Samakanda is much more than just a farm, however, since a great majority of it has been left as a biodiversity refuge to preserve habitats for the great variety of wildlife residing there. Much of the land is traversed by a great number of paths so that walks of various lengths and ease may be enjoyed to fill much of the day.
