Gangaramaya Viharaya
Tucked away next to the Beira Lake, the Gangaramaya Vihara is probably Colombo’s most famous Buddhist temple. Since 1890, it has been making a valuable contribution to Buddhist traditions in Sri Lanka. Indeed, Gangaramaya Viharaya has become a world renowned centre for worship and Buddhist learning.
Gangaramaya has the main features of a vihara (temple), the cetiya (pagoda) the Bo-tree, the vihara mandiraya (image house), and the relic chamber. In addition, there are a museum, library, residential hall, three-storied pirivena (educational halls), and an alms hall.
The Navam Maha Perahera (perahera is a grand procession), held at the Gangaramaya Vihara, is one of the grandest in Sri Lanka. In the annual Navam Perahera, which began in 1979, many dancers and artists display their talents. And elephants are dressed in garlands, as they majestically glide along the road appropriately named Navam Mawatha.
