Surfing in Hikkaduwa
In Sri Lanka, Hikkaduwa, located 100kms south of Colombo, is the ideal place to learn to surf and the best time of year is at the height of the tourist season in December. With warm water temperatures of around 28C, air temperatures ranging from 27C to 30C, blue skies, crystal clear waters, hot sun and the cool evening breeze, surfing in this bustling coastal resort is a treat.
The best area to learn to surf in Hikkaduwa is called Beach Break, but there are three or four other points as well. The most popular is the main reef. During the season the water is clear enough to see the ocean bed and the waves range from three to six, or sometimes even seven feet high. The waves here form an A shape and break in two directions, so you can choose to surf either the right or left wave.
