Rock Climbing in Hanwella
Rock-climbing is a relatively new activity in Sri Lanka. Rock-climbing in Sri Lanka goes back to antiquity with the story of Hanuman the monkey-general contained in the epic Indian poem, the Ramayana.Hanuman searched the island for Sita, Rama’s beloved princess, who had been abducted by Ravana, the demon-king of Lanka.
The rugged terrain of the Knuckles Mountain Range offers some advantageous locations for this sport, and scaling the rock-face of Bambarakanda waterfall, Sri Lanka's highest, is exhilarating.
Two of Sri Lanka’s best sites are located at Hanwella and Avissawella. Both locations are about an hour’s drive from Colombo and offer excellent climbs. Each site offers four-to-five routes ranging from beginner to intermediate to advanced climbs.
