Established in 1941 as a lending library, which in time developed into a bookshop, by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd., on the initiative of its then Chairman, D. R. Wijewardane and company secretary, E. E. E. Abeysekara, the Lake House Bookshop has its Main Shop now located at No: 100, Sir Chittampalam A. Gardiner Mawatha, Colombo 2 and it is the most prestigious bookshop in Sri Lanka, as well as being easily the best-known Sri Lankan bookshop internationally. The bookshop is registered as the Lake House Bookshop (Pvt) Ltd. and its registered address is No. 41, W. A. D. Ramanayake Mawatha, Colombo 2.

 
The Bookshop has been the exclusive news-stand distributor for TIME and FORTUNE in Sri Lanka from 1996 and exclusive Sri Lanka subscription and news-stand agent for Business Traveler, Asia-Pacific magazine for even longer.
