Elphinstone Theatre

The second oldest theatre found in 1925, Elphinstone Theatre has played a silent role of being the venue for some of the greatest theatre productions made in Sri Lankan history. It’s situated in Maradana and can be reached in about 15 minutes from the star class hotels in Colombo 3.  This lovely theatre was refurbished spending a massive amount to provide the viewers a better theatre experience, with many facilities and other services.

Famous Sinhalese Theatre productions such as Sinhabahu, Maname and new ones such as Ekadhipathi, Gabbara Minisa (Pregnant Man) were performed on this well known stage over and over again. If you want to get a feel of Sri Lankan Theatre in Sinhalese this is the place to be. You’ll be fascinated how talented these actors are and some of them have been in the field of theatre dramas for over 15 to 20 years or may be lot more than that.
You will be able to see posters pasted on walls or banners hung on the side of the roads n and around Colombo to promote some of the events at Elphinstone Theatre and they advertise on the papers as well. 
If you want to see the theatre performances especially during weekends, it’s better to reserve your seats before you come in to the theatre because there’s a bigger chance of all the tickets being sold out. Even if you do not understand the language you will definitely understand the story through their well rehearsed acting or you can take a guide or a new found friend in Lanka, who can make you understand the story.
