The event is organized for the 10th year by Lanka Sportreizen (LSR) and  is the only International acclaimed marathon in the country .The inaugural event was held in 1998 with the Galle Fortress, as the focal point and attracted 28 foreigners and 328 local participants. Since then it has been successfully held in Negombo, Kandy, Dambulla and Colombo and has gained popularity with every passing year. In 2004 the marathon was officially named the Colombo Marathon in line with the famous Marathons named after cities such as London, Boston, New York, Hawaii etc.  The target audience includes Young school children,competitive athletes,fun loving people and corporate representations. Sri Lanka Tourism is proud to be a sponsor for the event.

Main Objectives

• To boost further the image of Sri Lanka as a safe and secure tourist destination where people live in harmony.
• To promote Sri Lanka as an ideal destination for Recreational Activities.
• To assist the charitable arm of the Basil Rajapakse Sansadaya launched by Hon Basil Rajapakse, Minister of Economic Development, which is committed to the improvement of the life standards of the children who suffered as a result of the war.

We anticipate an overall participation of approximately 1500 - 2000 athletes with 100 foreigners to compete in the following categories.

Route
Colombo Marathon will be flagged off from the Ministry of Sports at the Torrington Square and will run through Borella, Dematagoda, Peliyagoda, and Wattala along the Hamilton Canal, Pamunugama, Thalahena, Pitipana, and Duwa to Beach Park in Negombo where it will terminate.
