Ussangoda

Ussangoda

Ussangoda is located east of Rekawa and Kalametiya near the village of Nonagama. It’s a very peculiar place, shrouded in mystery, and yet to be fully explored. A lunar landscape prevails; the earth is a dark red, and the area devoid of trees. Instead, moss, short grass and bush dominate the place, growing in strange formations. From inland the area gently slopes down towards the coast where cliffs hang over a sandy bay. Although declared a prehistoric site – most of it comes under the authority of the Department of Archaeology – there are other stories that aim to explain its uncharacteristic appearance.

One is that a meteor fell here, which would account for the barren nature of the soil. Another story is connected to the epic Ramayana legend, claiming it was here that the evil King of Lanka, Ravana, landed his mythological flying machine (vimana) when he came to capture Sita, the wife of Prince Rama of India. Meanwhile the villagers say that many metres below the surface is fresh water, which is unusual since it is so close to the sea.

Ussangoda is undoubtedly a fascinating place where rare medicinal plants, protected flowers and herbaceous shrubs thrive on highly lateralised serpentine soils. The sheltered beach also offers the rare opportunity in this area of safe swimming, while a walks are enjoyable. The view over Kalametiya Sanctuary, the coastline and out to sea is breathtaking.

Close to Ussangoda is the village of Godawaya. Fringed by mangrove stands, it is another popular bird-watching spot. There is a small temple here and also a Home for the Blind Elderly, which tourists are encouraged to visit.
