Situated just 8Km’s away from the Bandaranaike International Airport and 37km’s from Colombo is the beautiful and city by the beach, Negombo. If jetlag has hit you badly then you can make Negombo your first destination since it’s only 10 minutes away from the Airport and have luxurious hotels along the coast.

This city where the shore opens up to a lagoon is also called the ‘Little Rome’ because of the Catholic Churches which were made in the time of Portuguese used to colonise the country, still standing strong with beautifully designed structures.  The Dutch Fort and the canal in Negombo are sites you need to keep an eye on for if you like to see the massive structures from the 17th Century. 
If you are eco lover then Muthurajawela Marshland which is the biggest marsh land in Sri Lanka is not too far away from this city, will definitely be the place for you.

Don’t forget to try out the lovely sea food at small restaurants by the beach and chill out with a beer in small yet very colonial looking pubs with some fancy names. There are couple of foreigners running restaurants in this area as well. 
Negombo beach is the perfect location for you to take a dip in the sea but make sure you swim in a safe area with lesser risk of danger or where lifeguards are around. If you have the time for some diving lessons there are few schools offering lessons as well. You will be able to see beautiful fish in deep water when you dive in to the sea which will be a great experience.
While you enjoy your holiday in the beautiful beaches of Negombo, you’ll be able to get some shopping done as well. Colourful beach wear is also hung to be sold at the shops near the hotels.
