Overview
The Alpine Hotel, an outdoor adventurer’s paradise, is located within, and has easy access to the beautiful patchwork canvas town of Nuwara Eliya, surrounded by scented crops and blushing roses. Aptly named, it would not look out of place within any ski resort due to its unique design, while it is also prepared for freezing temperatures at night-time with warm blankets and open log fires. The hotel has many windows, wooden ceilings and its green roof is in a triangular design to suit this more wet and mountainous region.
Among the activities offered by Alpine Eco Adventurers, camping and trekking, offered with superior equipment, is a specialty and very popular with guests. Many come to the Alpine because of its impeccable reputation and long-time standing as the honest activities tour operator in Nuwara Eliya. Trips can be organised to 15 of the waterfalls in the region, night drops to Adam’s Peak, fishing and boating trips, mountain bike hire and nature tours. Bird watching to Bamburu Ella, Horton Plains, Chimney Falls and Baker’s Falls are some of the attractions around.
Dining
Food at the hotel consists of rice and curry for lunch and either a set menu, including soup and dessert, or a la carte for dinner, in the very pink dining room. Due to Nuwara Eliya’s richness of fruit and vegetables you are guaranteed fresh and tasty food and at The Alpine, generous portions too.
You can have a relaxed dinner followed by a drink in the wooden, authentic bar. It is fully stocked with warming spirits and a selection of wines. Small and cosy, and created in the colonial style, its highlight is the open log fire. It is constantly attended to, as the hotel tends to be quite cold in the evenings. The friendly bar staff and managers are always around, and they are a good source of knowledge and information about the local area.
Rooms
It is a medium-sized hotel with 25 rooms on four floors, so the definite advantages are its more personal service and homely atmosphere. You see the same polite members of staff as you wander from the dining room to bar, bedroom, lounge and lobby. A room is spacious, warmly carpeted, has floor-length curtains, en-suite bathroom, a telephone and a TV.
The large bed is covered with thick blankets and a bedspread and on either side were bedside tables with huge lamps and comfortable chairs to relax in. It feels very homely. The many windows allows you to admire the extensive views that stretched over the town, and on opening them, you will be hit by the delicious smell of leeks from the field below. At The Alpine Hotel you get honest service, great tours and exceptionally comfortable rooms with good facilities for a very reasonable price.
