Overview
Teak Forest is an eco-resort deep in the dry zone of Dambulla, designed and constructed with maximum care and awareness of the surrounding environment. This means it is extremely minimalist in style and function.
Teak Forest is a hub sitting in the middle of the Cultural Triangle and the archaeological treasure troves of Polonnaruwa, Dambulla, Sigiriya and Anuradhapura are all within a couple of hour’s drive. There is a host of other attractions along the way, such as the less-frequented Pidurangala Rock Temple and caves, the mysterious Ritigala Forest Monastery, local temples, and lakes populated by a huge diversity of bird and insect life. For bigger game there’s Minneriya National Park just down the road.
Rooms
Yet the sparseness of Teak Forest embraces a degree of comfort and attention to detail seldom found. The cabins are on stilts, the rooms are big and comfortable, cooled by fans (no air-conditioning), but the nights can be surprisingly chilly so bring appropriate clothing. The bathrooms offer both hot and cold water. Each cabin has its own little verandah overlooking the garden, perfect for evening drinks, reading, chatting, bird-watching or sunbathing.
Dining
The concept of service at Teak Forest is just perfect: meals whenever you want them, coffee served on your verandah at any time of the day, and the attentive yet discreet friendliness promised by every hotel brochure but delivered by so few. You can enjoy a splendid supper beneath the night sky - serving up an unbelievable pumpkin soup for starters, followed by a meal full of surprises, from tiny crisp freshwater fish to a stunning mango curry, luscious spiced chicken and an astonishing selection of fresh local fruit.
In fact, the cuisine at Teak Forest has been favourably compared to that of some of the five-star hotels and resorts in the area - a compliment to be treasured, especially in light of the fact that every meal is cooked and served up by villagers, who take turns to come into the Teak Forest kitchens to offer guests their different creations. So you’ll see no chefs in white hats and checked pants, but every meal will be a delightful discovery of unusual flavours and combinations traditional to this region, the heart of the country.
