Overview

Tamarind Hill Galle Sri Lanka exudes a lavish style, a wealth of good taste that's not over the top. Its awe-inspiring magnificence could be overwhelming for the hoi polloi but for those who crave privacy and tranquility it fulfils desires. Positioned on a 3 acre hill with huge courtyards, beautiful verandahs and tropical gardens, Tamarind Hill offers the ultimate in comfort, stylish design and modern amenities in contrast with the charm of a bygone era.

Another masterpiece from the creations of Nayantara Fonseca, the Tamarind Hill is a chic boutique hotel, built in the early 19th century, this former manor house was the residence of a British Admiral and High Court Judge before it was refurbished into the stylish boutique hotel it is today. In redecorating this colonial manor, the designer has taken great care to preserve the historical ambience.

Beautiful Dutch period antiques and cushioned sofas share space in the long corridors while the white-washed walls are decorated with old maps and modern art alike, creating the perfect fusion between the old and the new. The boutique hotel Tamarind Hill beautifully blends the grandeur of the past with the comforts of modern living. A Tamarind tree, from where the property takes its name, is the centerpiece to the large courtyard. The tropical gardens that are look towards the river lead to the stunning infinity-edge swimming pool.

Rooms
Tamarind Hill has 11 rooms and 2 suites offering the ultimate in comfort. 4 types of rooms are offered; standard, superior, de luxe and the suites.  All are air conditioned, spacious and have modern bathrooms en suite. Generous, exotically fragranced toiletries are provided and, as always in Taru hotels, an abundance of fresh white towels. Large, king sized, four poster beds have fresh white linen, overlaid by colourful throws of local fabrics in the spice colours of the island.  TVs, DVD players and mini fridges are included.

Dining
A bar with comfortable front lounge area as well as a restaurant and dining area is located on the ground floor of the main house – the service is personal and the cuisine is emerging as some of the best in the south. Be it a Queen’s breakfast including continental offerings while lunches could typically be from Thailand, Vietnam or Mexico. Dinner would have to be from Japan or maybe the romantic city of Venice.

Special
There is ample to do beyond the gorgeous setting of Tamarind Hill, if you could only pull yourself away from this tiny haven of absolute tranquility. Visit the historic town of Galle, exploring narrow streets, interesting restaurants and savouring the sights and sounds. For those who require a little bit of extra adventure visit Mirissa where a variety of watersports and top surfing spots can be found. There are a variety of superb beaches worth visiting in the local area, from the long surfing beaches of Hikkaduwa to the crescent-shaped Unawatuna Bay. Visit the Rhumassala Temple with beautiful views stretching out over the Indian Ocean. A walk around the headland near the temple is very special.
